No kidding, Jacob! Even modern socialist states couldn't get away with the level of taxation Louis Quatorze used to finance his reign. He WAS the STATE. When he wanted to go to Versailles from le Louvre, the entire government went with him. Or if he wanted to go to Fontainebleu, the entire government went with him. That's why, at Fontainebleu, for example, there are more than 1,000 rooms...
It is really incredible! I know we were literally stunned by Versailles...I mean it is a gorgeous place, but my god, how did they ever justify the expense...I suppose they felt they were ordained by god to rule so it was their right to live like the gods.
That's my understanding...very high taxes used to pay for the extravagance that was and is Versailles...that's why the protesters grabbed Marie Antoinette - she was a symbol of that extravagance and the royalty who treated the common people like dirt.

I wonder what it would cost re-create Versailles and everything in it.
I don't think there's enough money in all of France to do that!

Didn't Versailles play a significant role as a cause of the revolution?
